There can be substantial savings involved in doing a system installation yourself, however there are some things you need to consider.

First, with most all systems there are parts of the installation that require a qualified technician. In many cases the equipment can be set in place, the wiring placed for both supply and thermostat, and the refrigeration lines (if needed) can be placed. HOWEVER, the brazing of refrigeration lines, and evacuation of the system requires equipment and expertise that normally only a qualified tech will have. Since this is a VERY IMPORTANT part of the installation, it is not advisable to take the chance of not getting it done properly. Doing what you can by placing equipment and materials will still enable you to save money over a complete turn key installation.

Secondly, the control wiring (thermostat) must be correct and the initial start up of an HVAC system requires a knowledgeable technician to check pressures, temperatures and electrical draw to determine what adjustments need to be made to operate at it’s peak.

Third, warranty registration must be submitted including the name and phone number for the installer. Also, no manufacturer will warrant parts failures resulting from improper installation, no matter who does the installation.

MOST importantly, keep in mind that all manufacturers indicate that well over half of all system problems result from improper installation, even with most being installed by professional technicians. Getting a reputable and well trained technician to install your system can provide great benefits in not having future problems, as well as having a system that delivers all the performance it was designed to provide.

With regard to warranty you also need to keep in mind that all HVAC manufacturers warranty PARTS ONLY. If there is a problem, the warranty will cover the part alone. How a Heat Pump Works

A heat pump system is made up of four major components. Let’s explore each component, and learn how a heat pump operates.

· The outdoor unit or heat pump – is the unit that sits outside your home and contains the compressor, condensing coil, reversing valve, defrost control, fan and motor and all the systems electrical components.

· The air handler – is the name given to the combined evaporator coil, blower motor and electric heater pack. The air handler must be properly matched to the outside unit and should always be replaced when you purchase a new system in order to maintain maximum system efficiency and prolong the life of your new heat pump. If you don’t replace the air handler the outdoor unit will fail prematurely.

· The heater pack is the electric heat elements that are installed in the air handler. When the heat pump cannot keep up with the homes demand for heat the electric elements cycle on. The heater pack is also known as emergency heat – in the sense that it can be used when your heat pump has failed.

· The line set – The line set is the copper tubing that connects the air handler to the heat pump. The black insulation or armaflex on this tubing keeps it from sweating as the cold refrigerant passes through it. The line set should be replaced whenever possible to avoid contamination and to help extend the life of the new equipment.

· Variable Speed Blower Motor – In addition to the 4 major components, you also have the option of adding a Variable speed Blower motor to your Heat Pump System. When you purchase a heat pump you are purchasing a system. The pump outside is matched with the air handler inside. The blower on the air handler is critical to the operation of the pump. That’s where variable speed comes in. The variable speed blower increases the efficiency of the system because the GE ECM motor is electrically more efficient than standard motors. When you run your fan continuously this motor costs up to 90% less to operate than a standard blower motor. Variable speed also increases comfort. It ramp starts, slowly bring the fan up to speed helping to avoid the sudden burst of air most systems deliver. Variable speed runs at a slower speed in continuous operation, using about as much energy as a 100-watt light bulb, as it constantly circulates the air in your home. This evens out hot or cold spots, without feeling a draft. This reduces air velocity making your air cleaner and humidifier more efficient. This motor even compensates for a dirty air filter by running faster as it senses air filter restriction.

Here’s how a Heat Pump Works

In the summer a heat pump uses refrigerant, pumped by the compressor, to transport the hot air inside your home outside. The heat pump coil outside dumps the heat into the atmosphere while the coil inside the air handler releases cool air into your home while at the same time absorbing heat and repeating the cycle again. The air handler fan distributes the cool air inside your home while the heat pump fan dumps the hot air outside. In the winter reverse the cycle. There is always some heat in the air outside. The heat pump captures that heat, pumps it inside and releases it in your home. Unfortunately there is also moisture in the outside air. This causes frost build up on your heat pump and it must remove this frost to stay efficient. To do this the pump quickly turns back into an air conditioner causing the ice to melt on the outside coil. As soon as the ice is melted it reverses back into a heat pump. Now you know what a defrost control and reversing valve do! As it gets colder out the heat in the atmosphere is harder to find and your electric heaters will cycle to supplement the pump. Why not just use the electric heat? Because pumping heat from outside can be up to 300% more efficient than using electric heaters. In other words, you use the heat pump because it saves you money. Of course a heat pump is not quite that simple but for our purposes lets leave it at that.

Above Ground Pools – Essential Care Tips

Soon spring will be here and it will be time to undergo the task of opening your above ground swimming pool. Planning will make your job a whole lot easier. There is nothing worse than realizing you’re short one bag of shock when you are in the middle of prepping the pool. So first, you need to make a list of chemicals that are needed.

The needs will vary depending upon the type of pool you own. Therefore, this article will talk about it in general. You should always refer to your pool and pump instructions for additional information. Things you will likely need are liquid or powder shock, bromine, chlorine powder or tablets, sanitizing cartridge for the cartridge filters, pH increase or decrease and a test kit to test the chemical levels.

Do not take off just yet and run to the local pool supply store for chemicals. Stop and take a few minutes to check out all of your hoses, skimmer baskets, clamps, gaskets and o-rings. If any of the parts look like they might need replaced, take them with you to the pool supply store. It is a lot easier to match replacement parts if you have the old part with you.

Now that you have the easy part finished, it is time to begin the fun. The first thing required taking the cover off. You will want to enlist help for this, because you want to avoid getting any top water into the pool water. In an above ground pool, you should siphon the water off with a hose.

To get a good siphon started, hook up the hose to the spigot and put the other end of the hose into the top water. Turn the hose on for a minute to fill it. Next crimp the hose a foot or two away from the faucet, and with your other hand, disconnect the hose from the spigot. Position the hose at a downspout drain to discharge then let go of the crimp. The water will reverse and start to drain.

Once you have the water cleared, use a leaf rake to remove as many leaves and twigs as possible. Next, remove your cover weights or springs. At this time a few people positioned around the pool will help to keep the cover out of the water. Try to fold your cover like a blanket keeping the crud in the middle then remove the cover. You need to scrub the cover thoroughly so it is dry for summer storage.

Now it is time to attach all the pump hoses. Remember to lube plugs, fittings, valves, and o-rings with petroleum jelly. Also, be sure to remove any freeze plugs that were used to cover the hose openings. You will most likely need to add water to the pool. It needs to be filled to the skimmer halfway point.

At this point you should start re-circulating the water and check for any leaks around the pump and hoses. Once your pool is leak and drip free, skim off as much floating debris as you can with your skimmer net. Open all your valves to flood the hoses and prime the pool pump. Most manufacturers recommend constant recirculation of the pool water for at least three days. Any crud and debris on the sides and bottom of the pool will need to be scrubbed off. Use the broom attachment of your pool vacuum for this.

After all debris has been removed and the pool has been scrubbed, check your filter for cleaning. Some pumps have removable filters; others are back-flushed, so clean as directed. Once the filter is cleaned, you can now super shock the water as per your manufacturer’s instructions. If you start with green water, you will need a lot more shock. It may take a few days of recirculation to clear the water. Once the water has cleared, test your water or take a sample to your pool supply store and have it analyzed. Adjust the water as required and keep the recirculation going. All that is now left to do now is to wait for the water to warm up so you can start enjoying your pool.
